But when life throws its challenges, whether it's a tough exam paper, a presentation at the firm, or even a conversation in a group what truly takes us further?

Let’s be honest. We’ve all come across someone who seems to “wing it” purely with confidence. Maybe they don’t always have the answers, but the way they present themselves gets them noticed. At the same time, we’ve also seen the quiet performers—the ones who know their stuff inside out but often hesitate to speak up or take the lead.

Competence is built brick by brick—through studying, practicing, failing, and trying again. It’s the foundation of sustainable success. You can’t fake it for long in a profession like ours. When you’re asked to audit a balance sheet, draft a report, or explain a complex GST implication—confidence alone won’t save you. Your skills and understanding will.

During articleship, I’ve noticed something interesting. Those who blend both—who know their work and also speak up—tend to grow faster. They’re the ones seniors rely on, not just for completing tasks, but for handling responsibilities. They may make mistakes, but they bounce back faster. Why? Because they believe they can.

Confidence without competence can look like arrogance. Competence without confidence can go unnoticed. But the magic lies in balancing both.

To every student reading this—don’t wait to feel “ready” before you show up. Build your knowledge, yes. But also work on backing yourself. Because in the long run, it’s not about choosing one over the other. It’s about letting competence fuel your confidence.
